Following an Art Foundation Year, Julian studied Sculpture Restoration for three years at Roger de Grey's (past .P.R.A.), The City and Guilds of London Art School. Practical aspects of this course, which included a period of study in northern Italy, emphasized drawing, modelling, wood and stone carving, letter cutting, gilding and conservation/restoration techniques.

After Art School , Julian was employed by the international fine art restorers, Plowden and Smith Ltd, in London , where he mainly worked on the restoration of wood and stone sculpture. Pieces ranged from Ancient Egyptian to Contemporary, included sculptures by Moore, Rodin and Archipenko and were made from materials such as wood, common lime and sandstones, alabaster, marble, granite, terracotta, slate and coadstone. He also worked on the mounting and preparation for such shows as the Gothic exhibition, 'The Age of Chivalry' at the Royal Academy. Other clients included the British Museum, the V&A, Sothebys and Christies.

In 1988-89 Julian did a Post Graduate Teaching Certificate at The University of London, Goldsmiths' College, following which he taught Art and Design & Technology at a secondary school for nine years. In September 1998, he resigned his full time teaching post so that he could dedicate more time and energy to his art.

Since 1985 he has produced a substantial body of work, including Indian ink drawings, wood, stone and bronze sculpture. Julian has also occasionally shown woodcut prints and paintings.

In 2006 Julian became a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. Julian is now showing work at the Clifton Hotels: The Square, The Rodney and the Clifton and the Marriott Royal Hotel on College Green (Bristol.) In recent years his work has been included in the C20th Art & Design Fair, 20/21 British Art Fair, Affordable Art Fair, Olympia and the R.W.A.
